چکیده

The peridynamic model of solid mechanics is a nonlocal theory containing a length scale. It is based on direct interactions between points in a continuum separated from each other by a finite distance. The maximum interaction distance provides a length scale for the material model. This paper addresses the question of whether the peridynamic model for an elastic material reproduces the classical local model as this length scale goes to zero. We show that if the motion, constitutive model, and any nonhomogeneities are sufficiently smooth, then the peridynamic stress tensor converges in this limit to a PiolaKirchhoff stress tensor that is a function only of the local deformation gradient tensor, as in the classical theory. This limiting Piola-Kirchhoff stress tensor field is differentiable, and its divergence represents the force density due to internal forces. The limiting, or collapsed, stress-strain model satisfies the conditions in the classical theory for angular momentum balance, isotropy, objectivity, and hyperelasticity, provided the original peridynamic constitutive model satisfies the appropriate conditions.

Survey of Existence Results in Nonlinear Peridynamics in Comparison with Local Elastodynamics

We give an overview on existence results in nonlinear peridynamics, a nonlocal elasticity theory, and compare these results with those known for classical nonlinear elastodynamics. In peridynamics, it is possible to obtain stronger results under equal or even less restrictive assumptions on the stress.

Leading-Order Nonlocal Kinetic Energy in Peridynamics for Consistent Energetics and Wave Dispersion

This paper first considers the approximation of peridynamics by strain-gradient models in the linear, one-dimensional setting. Strain-gradient expansions that approximate the peridynamic dispersion relation using Taylor series are compared to strain-gradient models that approximate the peridynamic elastic energy. The dynamic and energetic expansions differ from each other, and neither captures ...

Existence results in nonlinear peridynamics in comparison with local elastodynamics

We give an overview on existence results in nonlinear peridynamics, a nonlocal elasticity theory, and compare these results with those known for classical nonlinear elastodynamics. We conclude that even though peridynamics was developed in the beginning of the current century, it is possible to obtain stronger results under equal or even less restrictive assumptions on the stress. PhD Dissertation Defense DISCRETIZED BOND-BASED PERIDYNAMICS FOR SOLID MECHANICS

The numerical analysis of spontaneously formed discontinuities such as cracks is a long-standing challenge in the engineering field. Approaches based on the mathematical framework of classical continuum mechanics fail to be directly applicable to describe discontinuities since the theory is formulated in partial differential equations, and a unique spatial derivative, however, does not exist on...

A Review of Peridynamics and its Applications; Part1: The Models based on Peridynamics

Peridynamics is a nonlocal version of the continuum mechanics, in which partial differential equations are replaced by integro-differential ones. Due to not using spatial derivatives of the field variables, it can be applied to problems with discontinuities. In the primary studies, peridynamics has been used to simulate crack propagation in brittle materials. With proving the capabilities of pe...
